Membership meeting on May 22

There will be no HMGS membership meeting on the third Saturday in May, but please try to make it to Wargames on May 22 to help with last-minute Nashcon prep work. Thanks.

HMGS Member Needs Flood Assistance

Baxter told me that Tracy and Melissa Hale lost much of what they own in the flooding, and they have no insurance. We’ve pulled together to help members before, so let’s give them a hand. Baxter says by next Saturday there will be a donations jar at Wargames. Anyone out of area who would like to make a donation can send it to our p. o. box with a check made out to Tracy Hale. The address is HMGS MidSouth, P. O. Box 111972, Nashville, TN 37222-1972. Thanks. – Gerald Swick

January Meeting Notes

The January meeting of HMGS-Midsouth was held at Wargames Jan. 16. Here is information on what was discusssed.

Membership dues were set at $10 per year. This money helps to support Nashcon and Siege of Augusta and provides discounted entrance to the Big Three: Historicon, Fall In, Cold Wars. We are in the process of moving our treasury to a new bank; shortly thereafter, we will set up to accept payment through PayPal (as well as by check).

The Web site is also moving to a new hosting site. That proved to be a bit more involved than was expected, but Peter Mancini expects to have that completed within the next few days, and he will then redirect the old URL to the new one.

Nashcon is shaping up. We are going to have an officially sanctioned Rogue Trader tournament, featuring Warhammer fantasy battles on Friday, 40K singles and doubles on Saturday, and Lord of the Rings on Sunday. There will be an additional charge of $5 per tournament on top of the $20 Nashcon membership. The Nashcon tournament will be mentioned in White Dwarf magazine.

Two historical tournaments are in the works. Stay tuned.

We have about finished working out space requirements, and it looks like Tillercon computer gaming convention will be held concurrently with Nashcon. Final details should be worked out within the next few days. It was motioned and passed that anyone attending Tillercon, which is a separate convention and must be paid for separately, can also play at Nashcon for an additional $5 on top of the Tillercon admission—which is significantly more than Nashcon because they have to rent computers, but it includes a free computer game, as I understand it. Entrance to the dealer room will be open to all, of course.

Al Gaiser will send out dealer letters next week.

Bryant Williams is investigating prices and options on creating plastic tumblers with a Nashcon logo for sale to help increase our treasury.

More details as they become available.

HMGS Midsouth Membership Meeting set for Aug 15

General membership meeting of HMGS Midsouth will be held 11:00 a.m., August 15 at Wargames new location, 4825 Trousdale Dr., Suite 217, Nashville, TN. This is intended to reinstate the third-Saturday-of-each-month meetings that had been held in the past.

Brief updates on activities of the HMGS Midsouth Board – Gerald Swick president, Al Gaiser vice president:

Nashcon 2010
We are exploring possible new sites, in addition to the Marriott where the convention has been held for several years. Board accepted Baxter Key’s offer to serve as hotel coordinator, handling hotel negotiations and communications.

We placed a poll online re: Keep Nashcon on Memorial Day Weekend or move it to first weekend after Labor Day. Results marginally in favor of staying with Memorial Day weekend; the board’s final decision will be based on hotel pricing and availability.

Individual board members and others have volunteered to serve as coordinators for various aspects of organizing the convention:

Advertising and Promotion: Gerald Swick
Dealer room manager: Al Gaiser
Game scheduling: Bryant Williams
Setup and breakdown: Scotty Reeves
Registration desk: Neel Woodall
Preregistration: TBD

Our membership database has existed only in paper form since a computer crash destroyed the electronic version some time ago. (Backup . . . always backup!) A member is in the process of rebuilding it in a format that can be used for email notices and for postal mailings when those are necessary.

Several fundraising options have been discussed and are being explored.
