LST 325 Photos – WWII and 2012

While LST 325 was docked in Nashville, I took photos, then juxtaposed them with images taken during of the ship during World War II and posted the lot on HistoryNet, if you’d like to check them out. http://www.historynet.com/photos-of-lst-325-floating-tribute-to-the-wwii-generation.htm. Sure hope they can get it off that Kentucky sandbar without too much damage. That’s close to where a ship took out a bridge a year or so ago, isn’t it? Strange happenings on the Cumberland.

Check out this hotness: 15mm laser cut buildings

Just came across these. They are high quality and quite attractive. If you are looking to get an entire built up area done for your 15mm game I think these would really get the job done!

Obituary; Major Dick Winters

Major Dick Winters has passed away.

Here is an excerpt from his obituary:

Dick Winters, the former World War II commander whose war story was told in the book and miniseries “Band of Brothers,” has died.

Dick Winters led a quiet life on his Fredericksburg farm and in his Hershey home until the book and miniseries “Band of Brothers” threw him into the international spotlight.

Since then, the former World War II commander of Easy Company had received hundreds of requests for interviews and appearances all over the world.

He stood at the podium with President George W. Bush in Hershey during the presidential campaign in 2004. He accepted the “Four Freedoms” award from Tom Brokaw on behalf of the Army. He was on familiar terms with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, producers of the HBO mini-series, the most expensive television series ever produced.

Winters was always gracious about his new-found celebrity, but never really comfortable with it. He never claimed to be a hero and said that he had nothing to do with the national effort to get him the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor.

When people asked him if he was a hero, he liked to answer the way his World War II buddy, Mike Ranney, did.

“No,” Ranney said. “But I served in a company of heroes.” That became the tag line for the miniseries.

David Raybin and Ugo Bernaseoni (Last Cavalry Charge Veteran)

My wife, Kay,  and I were in Italy in October and visited  the Lake Como area which is in the northwestern corner near the Swiss border.   Wonderful sights and food and people. While there, by chance,  we ran into a cavalry reunion which you can read about on-line.  HERE There are some wonderful photos from the website here :

I took some photos myself and they are below but what was just fantastic was my introduction  to Mr. Ugo Bernaseoni who was the trumpeter in the 1942 REAL cavalry charge against the Russians. This (perhaps one of the last) Cavalry charges in history took place on 23 August 1942, at Izbushensky on the River Don. The Italian Savoia Cavalry Regiment, and consisting of 600 mounted Italian troops, charged against 2,000 Soviet troops. There were other WWII veterans at the reunion .  The gentleman is 90 and apparently is the one of the few remaining  survivors of the battle.    Mr. Bernaseoni shows up with his German shepherd and new American wife.  The battle is something to read about. HERE. and  HERE . Meeting the trumpeter of such a  famous battle was something else again. Below are FIVE photos in the Image Browser.    David Raybin

Flames of War -Italy!

Dave Cliffel hosted a great of FOW set in Italy- 1944.  The Allies are stymied by the superiority of the German armor.  The Luftwaffe was also able to contest the skies.  The Americans are reduced to a battle of attrition using infantry.  Attacking at night with rangers and special forces the Americans attempt to deplete the German army…

Starting Positions

The Americans were tasked with clearing the Winery and taking a fortified farm off picture to the left.  The attack was screened by darkness.

Doomed American Attack

Unfortunately,  the Americans didn’t realize the winery was defended by an additional German platoon that had taken up a flanking position… such is the difficulty of a night attack.

Great game of an HMGS Meeting!

Thanks for all who came
